Duplicate IP address issue with VMware based build on linux

I am using VSphere ESXi server version 4.0.0 and running linux based CCM image on same. It was working fine till yesterday when i found that there is an IP address conflict between the ip address on VMware build and another server. I have removed the ip address from the server and reloaded all the devices and switches in the network. Now, I am not able to bring up the vmware build(cucm) with the old or changed ip address. Everytime I try to reset the vmware build and set a new ip address I see the follow error " Error, some other user already uses address"

Since lot of configuration are already been done on the vmware build(ccm) I would prefer a fix or work around for this issue. I even removed the virtual network adapter from Virtual machine and re-added, but no luck.

Please help.

Have you tried to ping the IP address you want to use before? If the guest reports a duplicate IP address, this might be really the case.

Hello and welcome to the forums Smiley Happy

This thread is a good example how to troubleshoot this issue http://www.experts-exchange.com/OS/Linux/Q_24072981.html

Did you also clear arp caches?

Paul,

thanks for the response. yes I reboot all the vmware server/switches to ensure that arp is clear. I also restarted the Vmware client machine and Vmware ccm build to ensure if the cache clears but didnt help.

I checked the link you had sent and yes I am facing the same issue. Would it possible for you to just copy that piece of information as i am not a member on Expert exchange.

Thanks alot for your reply

Awo, I am not able to ping this ip address or any of the addresses I am trying to configure. it seems its a bug either with Linux or vmware instance related.

Thanks

Hello,

That's always the trouble with experts-exchange,with some luck it shows you an approved answer, but after a few lookups you are kindly asked to become a member. And point is, I am also no member...

In short the article said:

  1. try to configure the linux box not with a fixed IP address, but try with a DHCP address (asusmes there is a DHCP server...)

  2. After you have managed to configure the linux box with a working IP address, try to find out the source of theother IP address

  3. rarp was used to determine the MAC address

Personally I do not think this is VMware related, but much more network related. I would first try to configure the Linux VM with a working (DHCP?) IP address.

Good luck.

PS In this free article alsosome useful troubleshooting tips: http://www.linuxhomenetworking.com/wiki/index.php/Quick_HOWTO_:_Ch04_:_Simple_Network_Troubleshootin...
