Does Ether Channel = LACP?

I'd like to use "Route based on IP hash".  I have switches that support LACP but do not specifically say "ether channel" anywhere.  I did some Googling and it says that ether channel can be configured using LACP.  What it doesn't specifically say is if these are the same thing.

Can anyone clue me in?  Will configuring LACP on my physical switches and enabling Route based on IP hash be correct?

Thanks.

Yes you use LACP and IP hash together

Hi Mark,

Etherchannel negotiation, such as PAgP or LACP must be disabled because they are not supported.

VMware supports static LAG (or EtherChannel or Port Channel), but not LACP.

You should either use static etherchannel or Trunk (HP)

See

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=1004048&sl...

or a older document, but still valid.

Thanks for the correction, Frank.  I had not attempted to implement yet, so I suspect you just saved me from possible frustrations!

Hi Frank

For vsphere 5.1, I think LACP is supported now.

but I am confusing what's the pros & cons of EtherChannel and LACP.

Which is better?

I read some articles of vmware KB, it seems LACP support is new and there are some limitation on LACP

For example:

1.LACP can only be used on VDS. (which vdwitch is only supported on vsphere Enterprise Edtion)

May I say the following conclusion:

1.for EtherChannel(Cisco) ,Trunk(HP) & LACP (IEEE Standard)

They might  be different setting for different brand of switch, but for vsphere setting ,it's all the same.

2.which Protocol to be used might depends on what brand of switch you used

The problem with hijacking a > 12 month old thread is that you pollute your own thread with misinformation. Specifically, the advice from Frank was accurate at the time. Now it isn't.

In short, to answer the question this thread is about, etherchannel != LACP.
