Does ESXI store its data files outside the partition?

HI guys just a question to the VMware gurus.

Are the datastore and vmdk files stored on a diff partition or part of hard drive to the esxi operating system.

does any one know.

The files that make up a VM including VMDKs are stored in a VMFS datastore and as I recall with the default install of ESXi a partition is created and formatted as a VMFS datastore but you can have shared storage (SAN or NAS) that can also be configured with VMFS datastores and store VMs including VMDK files there
