Different Build Numbers after ESXi4.1 U2 Upgrade

Hi,

Bit of a strange one here.  We have two vCenter servers running in linked mode running Update Manager as well.  Whilst patching two servers last night (Both Dell PowerEdge M600 Blades but different speed CPU's) I have two different build numbers.  The servers are updated from different Update Manager servers but I have verified that both Update Managers have exactly the same patch repository.  Below are the server build numbers:

Server 1 - 502767

Server 2 - 582267

Both servers are showing 318 patches applied and I've attached screen shots of exactly what patches are applied / obsoleted.  Server 1 is showing the following patches as Not Applicable:

ESXI410-201201402-BG (Updates VMware Tools)

ESXI410-201201401-SG (Updates Firmware)

Server 2 has successfully installed these patches

Any ideas?

Forgot to mention that both servers are running Enterprise Plus and ESXi

I have checked both the Critical Host Patches and Non-Critical Host Patches baseline on both servers and they are identical with reagrds to the two patches listed above.  I have also removed the baselines's from the vCenter where Server 1 resides and re-applied and scanned all hosts.  The host I patched last night is still showing compliant with build number 502767

So..  Looking on http://www.vmguru.nl/wordpress/build-numbers/ I can see that ESXi4.1 Update 2 should be build number 502767.  So now the question is why does my other Update Manger showing 582267 as the current full patch.

ESXI410-201201402-BG (Updates VMware Tools) and ESXI410-201201401-SG (Updates Firmware) are part of the patch (http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2002338) released after 41U2 release.

Server 2 is now 4.1U2 + Latest Patch ESXi410-201201001 and Server 1 is on 4.1U2.

Create a new baseline with ESXI410-201201402-BG, ESXI410-201201401-SG and scan Server1. these patches should be applicable on Server1.

If  VUM throws the message 'Not applicable' then ssh to the host and collect "esxupdate query" and "esxupdate --vib-view query ".

BTW, did you restart server 1 after applying the baseline? May be patch db is not yet refreshed.

Thanks for taking time to reply.  The server was rebooted as part of the remediation processand uptime is showing 14hrs which corresponds to when the patches were applied.

I'll try creating a new baseline but the default baselines have the correct patches in them so should be applying them as per the attached screenshots

Ideally, Yes. Not sure why it shows U2 build number and says Not applicable for latest patches!!.

Run these commands on Server1 and check those patches are installed already.

I've just created a fixed baseline with the two patches, applied it to Server 1 and scanned the host.  Compliance is showing as Not Applicable

Server 2 has applied the update successful (582267) and retired the old update (502767)

its weird. Cant see the patch installed. We've to go through the esxupdate logs which are present in /var/log/messages to root cause the issue.

Try restarting the host and scan, if its not working I would recommend to contact VMware support for debugging.

If you just want to update the host with patch and bring the build number to the latest, you can follow offline upgrade using command line. It will do the same task as remediable with VUM.

1. Download the patch offline bundle - https://hostupdate.vmware.com/software/VUM/OFFLINE/release-327-20120123-039410/ESXi410-201201001.zip.

2. Upload to a VMFS datastore.

3. Execute the command esxupdate --bundle=/vmfs/volume/<datastore>/ESXi410-201201001.zip update

Unfortunately we have around 15 hosts from that site so I want to get it working correctly through Update Manager (Which as far as I can tell should work fine)

I'll check out the logs and then raise with VMware support if I'm unable to resolve.

UPDATE:

Call was logged with VMware support and after being escalated it was the metadata that was corrput.  The metadata was removed and fresh synchronisation with VMware was initiated.  Once the metadata was downloaded again the correct patches were displaying.

Unfortuantely I cannot remember the exact location of the metadata files.  Log a call with VMware support or hopefully someone will reply here.

I was able to find the metadata file. My Update Manager is installed in D disk, and the file was located at:

D:\VMware Update Manager\Data\hostupdate\vmw\metadata\vmw-ESXi-4.1.0-metadata.zip

Deleting that file, asking VUM to download the patches and scanning the hosts solved the problem.
