The VMkernel is basically the heart of ESXi, i.e. the main part of the operating system. It uses the Management Network (as well as other VMkernel Port Groups for e.g. vMotion, iSCSI, ...) to communicate with the network.

The Management network (by default) is also the route for all NAS traffic (data flow from VMs to their storage and back).

vmkernel network can be defined as the network/portgroup used by ESXi itself for performing ESXi related tasks.., this excludes the VM production network as we have vm network for that.

vmkerne;/ESXi uses these vmkernl portgroups for multiple tasks like management, VMotion, iSCSI storage, vSphere replication, FT.
