Dell PowerEdge T610 and ESXi 4.0 Embedded

Hi everyone,

My company just purchased a new Dell PowerEdge T610 as our first VM server. They bought the exact same configuration that Dell recommended for virtualization, which came with an option to get the ESXi 4.0 embedded. Because Dell charges about 2000$ for premium service when buying the ESXi, the company decided that we will install the embedded ESXi ourselves (on an SD card or USB stick).

And so the task was given to me Smiley Happy

Now here is the problem that I am having. I downloaded the ESXi 4.0 installable with Dell customization, and it seems to be running fine on a USB stick. But I can't find the instructions on how to actually install the embedded and not the installable version of ESXi 4.0. So I have the ESXi 4.0 installable on the stick, but how do I get the embedded installed on it (or the SD card). I see that people have done it with ESXi 3.5, but all that there seems to be out there on the net about installing ESXi embedded yourself is only how to install the installable on the USB stick. Is this a stupid question, and embedded is nothing more then an installable on a USB stick??

Sorry for a newbie question....

Thanks a lot in advance!

Andre

embedded and installable should be the same, the difference would be that with the embedded option you would not need to install Smiley Wink

On old PE 2950/2900 there was a internal USB key and nothing more.

On some new PE there is a internal SD card.

The process to put esxi 4 on a sd is the same as putting it on the mem stick.. I do this with my T610 and it is working well. Also may I suggest while your making one make 2 and keep one put away for backup and its easy to configure if you have an update problem or some other glitch. Boots well runs well and as I have hp and dell and on the hp its installed on HD I have compaired and see no real seperation in the performance.

Have fun
