I'm trying to test out DPM on a Dell PowerEdge 2950. FOr this to work I need to setup IPMI so I can have a server go into safemode and exit out of safe mode. I've been googling like mad but have been unable to find an answer on how to get this to work. Whenever I try to put my host in standby I get this message:

vCenter has determined that it cannot resume host <hostname> from standby; therefore, the enter standby task was stopped.
Confirm that IPMI/ILO is correctly configured for host <hostname>. Or, configure vCenter to use WoL, ensuring there are at least two or more hosts in the cluster, and try the task again.

A couple things about this error: One this is a two host cluster (for testing purposes). Two, I'm using Dell hardware so I have to use IPMI not ILO.

I have logged into my DRAC page and have enabled IPMI over LAN, but I don't know what else to do here, nor do I know where any settings concerning this are found in vCenter or ESX. Any help would be appreciated.

I used the parameter from Dell OpenManage.

Under System / Main System / Remote Access you can see:

Enable IPMI Over LAN -> Yes (be sure that is YES)

    SOL Enabled Yes

    MAC Address XXXXXXXXXX

    IPv4 Address

    IP Address Source Static

    IP Address YYYYY

In ESX, under Configuration / PowerManagement / Properties I use:

    BMC IP: YYYYY

    BMC MAC: XXXXX

Maybe we are running different versions of the DRAC software, here are my settings:

As you can see I have IPMI enabled, but I don't have any IP settings except above in the network settings. Thank you for your help, this is what I'm looking for, I'm just not seeing the same settings on my version.

Actually I read that wrong, the IP settings were meant to be set in ESX, I see that now, hold on while I attempt.

That was it! Thank you, I didn't have the information in the configuration of ESX (I didn't know where it was). I have successfully put a server in standby and taken it out of standby, DPM here I come! :smileyhappy:

    Thank you!

    You're welcome.

PS: those info are also in the DRAC access (maybe you have a old DRAC firmware) under Remote Access section.
