Dell MD3000i iSCSI raid firmware version and VSphere 4.1

We ran into an issue upgrading one of our VMservers last week to version 4.1, seems that the iSCSI raid firmware version for the Dell San is not compatible, and our 4.1 server is not able to see the SAN. Has anyone else run into this? Does anyone know if Dell has released an updated firmware version yet?

Thanks, Tandrist

Gen 1 vs. Gen 2 isn't a hardware difference, it's the firmware (6.x vs 7.x). At one point a couple years back they decided that the firmware they created was too buggy to fix and they scrapped it and started over. All devices purchased in the last two years should have been shipped with the Gen 2 firmware and if you have an older one it is easily (though slowly) upgraded.

My system is running 07.35.22.61 and it works fine.

EDIT: Have you verified that the iSCSI initiator name hasn't changed during the upgrade? Remember, the Dell array determines what LUNs to show you by how the client identifies itself.

I don't have any issues with my MD3000i and vSphere 4.1. Are you on the gen 1 or 2 firmware? What specific version?

You can enter your device services tag number at http://support.dell.com and you should be able to see more detail and firmware download as well.

Good Luck.

RAID Controller Module

Firmware version: 07.35.22.61

Appware version: 07.35.22.61

Bootware version: 07.35.22.61

According to Dell Support there are issue's with this revision on 4.1?

What version are you using?

This is the version that is listed on Dell Support, based off the serial # of the SAN.

MD3000i Firmware Generation 2 - Version 07.35.31.60 - A-rev

How do you know by looking at the SAN version if it is Gen 1 or 2?

Thanks, Tandrist

Thanks for your reply!

Where can i verify that the iSCSI initiator name is the same? Is this on the VMware server or the Dell SAN?

When I go to iSCSI initiator properties I can see, based of the IP address, the Dell SAN under "target name" but when I go back to Config/Storage adapters main page, I can't see them.
