DSL Connection to Onboard NIC

I have a brand new Dell Poweredge T310 with dual nics in it. I can't seem to figure out how to connect my DSL modem to my main vm. My main vm is CentOS5 and I can't see mto get it to bring the dsl connection up by plugging it into port 1. Port 0 is my main ethernet port connected to my 24 port switch.

Am I missing something simple in the initial install to make this work? I selected two nic's in my CentOS install, but I'm wondering if they are just a virtual connection to my physical port 0.

I can't seem to find an answer by searching.

I want the CentOS vm to bring the DSL connection up amd mark it as ppp0.

Thanks.

Hi,

As the screen shows, the network is ready, just install your os and for sure, Connect your DSL to the vmNIC1. Smiley Wink

Its better to config your storage (if its available), network and your host and then continue to your guests.

May I ask the purpose of this CentOS? would it be something like firewall/cache or no just a VM with Internet Access?

If you want this VM to only communicate with internet and NOT with your network, just connect it to vSwitch1 and don't connect it to vSwitch0.

If it would share the internet access to the other VMs and Networks OR you want to connect to it from your network (via vmNIC0), then you must connect it to both vSwitch.

Hi, Welcome to forum

What is the configuration for your vSwitched and you up-link assignments?

Can you post the screen shot of your network design in vSphere client?

I draw a diagram which (I think) will work in your scenario.

The red line is the second connection of your CentOS in order to share the Internet or accessing your network.

I hope this diagrams help a little.

Thanks for the reply Kasraeian. That looks like what I want to configure. The modem will live on the Port 1 of the physical server and be only accessible to the CentOS vm.

Do I need to create 2 vswitches in ESXi and then map the Port 1 to vSwitch 1 to get this to work?

I was messing around earlier this morning and have messes the server up. I'm going to reinstall again and will post a screenshot after I get the server rebuilt.

Thanks.

I think this is how to set it up?

I haven't installed CentOS yet, but I think I needed to properly map the vswitches first?

Thanks.

I have a 1TB disk store in this box, and I am making the CentOS install to be the domain controller for a small network, as well as host email and one website. They want to do some simple file sharing and print to a network printer. Nothing fancy.

I am planning ahead for them, because I can see in 2 years they will want blackberry's or something and they might have to add a windows server or some software as well. This machine will let them virtualize it.

I plan to have a small Windows XP install to save ghost images of machines for bare metal recoveries periodically. I'm not sure what else they will require. They are talking about some sort of VPN access to get to the filesharing on the CentOS machine.

I want the CentOS vm to be the border device so I can track internet usage and do filtering with squid. So it is the only device that needs access to the DSL nic. If I run a couple of more VM's, they will route through the CentOS host.

Thanks for your reply.

Hi,

Your Welcome, so as I see, you must connect your CentOS to both vSwitch. Smiley Wink

About the question you asked earlier

Do I need to create 2 vswitches in ESXi and then map the Port 1 to vSwitch 1 to get this to work?

I made a thread but As far as I know, separate vSwitch will give you better performance and better security.

You can follow that thread so If I was wrong, You will get your answer.

I hope I didn't forgot anything. Smiley Wink
