Cut servername-ctk.vmdk file from datastore folder while VM still running, now server not responding.

I cut servername-ctk.vmdk(server 2012) file and pasted to different folder in datastore while VM was still running, now server not responding. ESXi 5.0 host and VM is Windows 2012 Std. I cut and paste the vmdk back into the original folder and powered down/up but server is still un-responsive. Is there anything I can do to repair this server?? I'm a VMWare virgin so any help would be greatly appreciated.

CTK files are used by Changed-Block-Tracking and after you removed the file and pasted it back, it may not contain proper data, so it's better to just delete it (ESXi will re-create this file if CBT is enabled for the VM/virtual disk). Anyway, this shouldn't cause the VM to stop responding. Please explain what stopped responding. Is it an issue with the VM on the host or is it an issue within the guest OS itself?

Hi Andre

Thank you very much for answering my post. Sorry I should have specified that it was the guest OS that wasn't responding. I can remote into the server via RDP but that's all I can do. Server Manager opens when you log into the server and I can't close or minimize it. I also can't access the start / settings / search bar. All I can do is open the task manager but cannot access the tabs ie users, performance, etc. I will try powering down the VM then delete the ctk file and power back up to see if that resolves the issues I am experiencing.

Hi Andre

You were correct about the ctk file not having that effect on the guest OS. I shut the VM down and cut the ctk file to another folder then brought server back up. The issue still remains and I am desperate to resolve as I don't have a backup for this as it's a new server. Any other suggestions?

If you don't have a backup, I'd recommend you create one now or at least create a snapshot while the VM is powered off (for data consistency reasons). A first step to troubleshoot the issue could be to boot to OS in save mode (pressing F8) and check the event logs for errors.

Btw. does the issue only occur when you use RDP or is it the same when you open the VMs console in the vSphere Client?

Seems that once I ran a backup then a differential after that the Guest OS was responding again.
