Currently using VMware ESXi 5.1.0 build 799733 that was or is currently part of VDI View - want to move to free bare metal version ESXi 6.0 - either upgrade or completely new install?

Hi,

We currently have VMware ESXi 5.1.0 build 799733 that was or is currently part of VDI View but we'd like to repurpose this by removing VMware VC and using the free version ESXi 6.0 bare metal installation on the current ESXi 5.1.0 host and connect directly to it without VC.

My question(s) are, can we do this and do an in place upgrade to ESXi 6.0 bare metal version which should keep the existing network/datastore configurations?

Or is it better/best to scrap the existing version installation and install it new without upgrading?

The reason I'd consider upgrading instead of a completely new installation is because the location of the HW is out of reach and the person doing it really hasn't done any installation/configuration of ESXi before.

Any information or help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

you have both options, either upgrade or completely reinstall.

Upgrade is better.

Before starting upgrade, make sure server hardware is compatible with ESXi 6.
