Creating a datastore from the local harddrive

If I wanted to use the spare space on the ESXi host machine as a datastore do I need to partition the hdd before I install ESXi on it or can I do it after?

By default installing ESXi uses your hard drive and converts it into a VMFS volume if you install it on local storage. If you plan on using the entire drive, just installing ESXi with the general settings you'll have a datastore already created for you.

And if you then browse that datastore, do you see the ESX files in there from VSphere Client or is it hidden?
