I can't create a new virtual machine in vSphere client. Right clicking the host or going to File > New Virtual Machine is greyed out. It seems like most administrative functions are greyed out, this could perhaps be a permissions issue. Can anyone help? A few things:
1. This is free ESX, I don't have vCenter
2. I'm logged in as root user
3. The host is not in maintenance mode
4. I tried running the service mgmt-vmware restart
command from PuttY
Do you have a license installed? Even the free version requires you get a license from VMware.
Did you may enter a 60 day evaluation license key, which is now expired?

Mario
It wasn't the trial as I've been using it for over 60 days -- I've been managing the servers since our main network administrator is on a project for the next year. I wasn't aware that I'd have a license even if it's the free version. I've sent our network admin an email requesting the login info.
Here is the link to the site where you can register for your free license.
Can anyone help? I've got my license key now but File > New Virtual Machine is still greyed out. When I try to install vCenter the option for "Deploy OVF Template" is also greyed out. If I go to Roles and try to add or clone a role, it is also greyed out and says "Add Role - No Privilege".
Fixed my problem by correcting permissions on the root account via this article: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=103119...
Glad you got it working.
