Copy server from one ESX4 to another

Hi,

I have 2 ESX4 servers, one main and the other I want to use as a backup in case the first one kick the bucket. Both have there own hard disks and I am NOT using a SAN.

What is the best way to copy VM from my main server to my backup server. I would like if possible not to shut down the VM to copy them.

Thanks.

zero) stop the VM

1st) TAR the VM directory into one file : vm.tgz

2nd) SCP to remote machine disk

Enjoy.

I used the converter to copy VM but I need to shut down the VM to do that, is there any way to be able to do that without shutting down the VM? or anyone has a script to shutdown the VM, copy the files to the other ESX then restart the VM?

Thanks.

The best solution is to use Veeam Backup with their "Replication" feature.

Is it a "real" copy or it changes NIC's physical address, hard disk IDs and so on ?
