Converting a virtual machine (Windows 2003) fails

Hi @ all,

i tried to convert a virtual machine (Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition) from a ESXi 4.0.0 Server to our new Cluster (ESXi 5.1.0). After 2 hours waiting, the process failed at 1% with "Error: event.DiskCloneFailedEvent.summary".

Both esx server and the virtual machine are in the same network.

Two weeks before i tried the same Conversion, but had to stop it in cause of a colleague, who needs the machine urgently. At this time the conversion state was 9% and i think it would have been successful.

Here are the loggings of the converter and i hope, someone can help me with this issue:

Exactly,  it is a common error.  it is always recommended to clean up the source server if the conversion has failed or been stopped previously

Hi,

While, I am still wondering on your question, the error thrown seems to be " description = "The operation experienced a network error",

I will come to it later after clearing my question.

Conversion is used for transforming physical to virtual and vice versa and from workstation to esx or from other virtual products to esx like xen.  I am wondering what kind of "conversion" you are talking about, since you are dealing with a movement of virtual machine in 4.0 to 5.1. Please correct me if I am wrong, and could you provide a little more details on the same.

Thanks,

zXi

Hi zXi,

yeah i think youre wrong. You can choose "VMware Infrastructure virtual machine", thats the source type for virtual machines on a esx-host and for destination type you can choose the same. So you have a conversion from esx-server to another esx-server. I converted a lot of machines to our new Cluster using the converter, but sometimes it feels like the converter wants to make me angry :smileysilly: Which information do you need?

Greetz,

Thomas

Thanks for enlightening me oh great one Smiley Wink

I do have very little expertise in convertor. But I can still suggest you one thing. To rule out the "description = "The operation experienced a network error", try to convert a dummy VM say 1MB disk from 4.0 to 5.1, since the VM and ESX are in same vSwitch, it should complete very quickly.

And to rule out the role of DCs, check out this if you haven't soVm ware converter 5.0 issues just on DC server, the others went fine

I'm confused, why are you trying to "convert" the machine if its already a VM.

The VM will run fine in either the 4.x or 5.x ESXi environment.

A simple migration is all that is needed not a conversion.

Perhaps, the 4.1 cluster does not have access to the 5.1 Datastores or vice-versa.

Have you cleaned but the previous convert.  make sure that the Agent is not running on that guest.  you may have to do a manual uninstall of the Agent from the Guest machine, then try again.

aslo are you starting the converter with Administrative authority? (right click run as.)

Thanks a lot for the quick replies!

@: Sorry, the old esxserver is a standalone Server, not in a cluster like the new one. The new 5.1 Cluster consists of two esxserver is in the same network but not i cant manage it with vCenter Server and so on. Thats why i cant use the migration function.

@: You mean, that an old task could be the reason why the new task doesnt work? I'll have a try, so i will uninstall the converter and reinstall it.
