Consumed Host Memory

We have numerous HP DL585 G2 and G5 ESX hosts running ESX 4 U2. These have the AMD processor. Across all of these hosts, the consumed host memory is usually a much lower amount than what is assigned. Especially when a vm is idle. When in use, that # will increase as expected.

We recently switched to the Dell platform with the Nehalum processors. I have a cluster of 4 of these and anything running on these Dells, the consumed host memory more or less matches the assigned memory. Even when the vm is idling at 0 to 66 mhz util. There are no mem reservations and shares are set at normal. The config is identical the the vm's on the HP platform. What is going on that would cause the vm's to consume 100% of the memory assigned on the Dells, but not the HP's? I have the cpu chipsets to enable the Execute Disable and the Virtual Technology.

There have been a lot of threads on this and the Nehalem processors. This is due to the use of large pages for memory. Have a look at this post for some history on the issue.
