Can anyone please tell me is it possible to connect HP hosts to MSA 1040 10Gb iSCSi with Direct Access Cable, without switch?
From HP employers I got information that it will not work with VMware.

If you controller and hba is supported than I don't think so you can not connect.
I will suggest you to give a try but definitely this would not be HA solution .
MSA 2040 support it but not your's model
