Confused. vSphere 5 Essentials "Different Assets"?

Purchased vSphere Essentials  Trying to get virtual vmware Vcenter Server Appliance working.  When trying to key in license returns message that says "The License Key belongs to a product that is intended for a different type of assets".

Yet when I decode, it says "VMware vSphere 5 Essentials (unlimited cores per CPU).   To which I reply  'um..yeah?...and...?'

What's going on?  Thanks.

It runs vCenter but with a different license. With Essentials (Plus) you get 2 licenses:

-> vSphere 5 Essentials (Plus) license (3 hosts) for in the host

-> vCenter Server Foundation (3 host) license for in the vCenter server

So, get your hands on the other license and you will see that that one works.

Oh.  OK.  So I really am confused then.

http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/products/vsphere/VMware-vSphere-Essentials-Kits-DataSheet.pdf

VMware vSphere Essentials Kit and Essentials Plus Kit include the
following key features and components:
<blahblah>
VMware vCenter Server for Essentials
provides centralized
management and performance monitoring for all virtual
machines and vSphere hosts with built-in physical-to-virtual
(P2V) machine conversion and rapid provisioning, using

virtual-machine templates <etc>

Basically the biggest thing you get with the Essentials is vCenter. You can now manage everything from the one vCenter console instead of going to each server individually.

As well as many others.

So, at first glance,  it seems like it should run vCenter Server.  Our high-dollar consultant says it should.

Is there a definitive list somewhere of exactly precisely what products I can use with an essentials license?  I mean, other than the marketing pap and buzzword laden blurbs that seem to be so common?

thanks again for the quick response.
