Confirming that vsphere 6 requires flash and does not support a client for RHEL6/firefox?

Hi,

My reading leads me to conclude that vsphere 6

1.  still requires flash

2.  does not support client access for RHEL6, either a native one or via firefox

Is this corrrect?

Thanks

Hi mips,

Yes, "officially" the vSphere Web Client 6.0 does not support RHEL6, and requires flash to run. However the following may be of interest (even though it is for 5.5): VMware KB: Unable to open the vSphere Web Client 5.5 in a browser on a Linux-based desktop

Ah, I was afraid of that.  The flash requirement is a non-starter for us.  The continued nonsupport of a client for the *nuxes just seals it.

Kind of professionally embarrassing for me, as I'm the one that pushed through vmware acquisition and deployment (uphill, I might add), and now I have to go back and say oops.

Yes, I wish VMware would move onto an HTML5 implementation (There are probably technical challenges), flash has so many problems, this being only one of them.

I don't know your security policies regarding flash / windows, or environment size but if you really needed a way you could install a Windows VM and use an open source remote desktop client to connect to it, then use the web client from within that? - Obviously you'd need a license for this but you could just go with a "desktop" OS ie Windows 8. Not ideal but "works" if you need a workaround.

Yeah, that's kind of what I've done for esxi 5.1 to use viclient.  But once I determined that the Way Forward with vmware is flash (evalution sequence..."requires flash"....moving on ", and that they've gotten pigheaded with the nuxes and browsers, I had to recommend that we stop any more effort towards vmware.

As far as the various 'fixes'...I don't have the time or resources to monkey with outhouse workarounds that at best will only ever half work.   So we've stopped.   vmware was supposed to make life easier.  What's on 5.1 will stay on 5.1, but I doubt there will be any more virtualization (using any technology), at least during my time here.  (bitter much? yep.).

Thanks  for listening. 😎
