Configure Datastore / disk latency alarm

Hi All,

I want to configure Datastore / Disk latency alarm. My aim is when the Datastore / Disk latency is above a certain threshold it should send an alarm.

I do not want to configure this at the VM level. I want to configure at the Datastore / disk level.

I am using ESXi 5.1 n 5.5 and v Center 5.1 n 5.5

I am unable to see the setting in the alarms nor I was able to find it on google

Thanks in advance

Vaibhav

I checked in my vCenter 5.5, both vSphere client as well as in Webclient, Looks like we do not have an option to monitor disk latency.

AFAIK its not possible to trigger alarm for Datastore / Disk latency but you can use 3rd party products like vKernel vOPS (formerly known as vFoglight ) and Veeam One.

vCenter environment does not have such alarm but if you have enterprise plus license, you can go ahead and configure SDRS which take care of datastore latency issues through IO load balancing module.

You get alarm for SDRS recommendations

In our case, we're using Veeam ONE for the very same purpose - receive an alarm if certain threshold of datastore r/w latency is exceeded; works like a charm. So, it might be worth taking a look.

Cheers.

Hello,

If you want to configure alarms latency datastore, you must fastidiously to third party tools to do so from the vsphere. But if you can set alarms for each LUN (datastore) from the storage array.

For best performance, look at this KB where it indicates how to calculate IOPS.

And if you want to do everything from vcenter, set alarms VM.

For more information look at you this BOOK on page 19 "Char Analysis".

You can create alarm for VM

  • Type monitor: Virtual Machine
  • Monitor for: specific condition or state ...
  • Trigger: VM Max Total Disk Latency
