Compatibility guide - difference between SAS 9211-4i and SAS 9211-8i

Hi,

I have to buy a compatible external PCI RAID / SAS Controler for a server (NEC Express 5800 Rg1).

The LSI MegaRAID SAS 9211-4i corresponds to my needs. I've checked the I/O compatibility guide, but only the LSI MegaRAID SAS 9211-8i appears on the list. The only difference between the 9211-4i and the 9211-8i seems to be the number of Sata ports (4 or 8).

Do you think that the 9211-4 will be OK if the 9211-8i is listed ? For some other products, like SAS 9220, 4i AND 8i are listed in the compatibility guide...

IMHO that should be O.K. as long as both use the same driver and firmware. But you'll never know....

If you have a fair dealer he would take it back if it doesn't work. Or maybe you can order it as some kind of "test installation." That is something we often do to try things out first. Of course, our dealer accepts this as there is some hardware "volume" we buy on a more or less regular basis.

Did you ever get the LSI SAS 9211-4i RAID controller card working with ESXi 4.1 or 4.0?

Hi!

I have LSI MegaRAID SAS 9211-4i working with ESXi 4.1 U1 - perfectly, no problem, out of the box (= no oem.tgz mangeling necessary).

It uses the mpt2sas driver.
