Clustering/Enable HA/DRS options

I have windows 7 OS with Vmware workstation. I have installed ESxi server 4.1 in Vmware work station. When Im connecting with Vsphere client to this ESX server i can't see the option of creating data center/cluster/Vmotion etc. Are these options limited with working on ESX server in VM ware work station. For testing purposes how I can try it.

Kindly help me.

As written you need at least 2 ESXi, a vCenter Server and a shared storage.

For vCenter I suggest to build the VM in workstation (not inside the virtual ESXi).

For the shared storage one option you be have a compatible NAS or build a VM (still in workstation) with openfiler or similar.

Or use the free iSCSI target from Microsoft.

Some of the functions may not work with virtualized hosts (I think e.g. FT will not work), however if you setup the virtual network in VMware Workstation for the hosts to have a couple of NICs (Host-Only networks will be fine for this) you may run vMotion/DRS and HA.

PS: To be able to activate HA, you need to assign at least ~2.5GB RAM to each of the virtual ESXi hosts.

Datacenter, cluster creation & etc only can be done on vCenter. Other than ESXi, you also must have vCenter to play with..
