Clone the host/guest

I am out of drive space, can't connect a nas for some reason(forget this topic for now) nor add a drive, out of room. SO

anyone tried to clone an ESX server to an external drive, put in new larger drives, clone ESX back to the previous, and have it work?

Yup - can be done . . .

Though if you are just adding space for Vms, just add an additional datastore.

One day I will virtualise myself . . .

I'm not sure to understand what you want to do: do you want to resize a host disk??

If you are out of space you can simple add a new datastore.

You can always backup (in several ways) your VM and reinstall your ESX and is more simple and faster than try to make a clone.

No. Replace the current hHD with larger ones. The pizza only holds two and they are mirrored and out of room.

And it is a complex ESX install networking wise; simple backup and rebuild is not a good use of time.

It only holds two drives, connecting a nas has proved unsuccesful.
