Cisco UCS

Anyone deployed Cisco UCS yet with vSphere. It is an interesteding offering which appears to take blades to a whole new level. Some of the interesting aspects include:

Hardware Virtualization

Memory - can use 192 or 384GB of memory per blade depending on model

Cabling - uses about half of normal cabling

CPU - CPU density is far greater than current blades.

Integration with other Cisco equipment. Call Manager and Integrity are now options for virtualization.

Management from a single pane of glass. This can be managed from Virtual Center.

I/O. With Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) and CNA's significant improvement in I/O.

I am looking to see what kind of gotcha's people have encountered other than cost. Have SAN upgrades been required or any other

hidden costs or requirements?

Mike

well, it is a wonderful solution, and works great!!!

as long as you have a switch for FC that supports NPV (like MDS), then you will have your SAN ready!!

We have been running VMware in UCS for a while now. There are no real gotchas as long as you are familiar with FC and FCoE if you are booting from SAN.

Gotta make sure your firmware is up to date on all the blades though. Most seem to be a release off when they are shipped out.
