I am looking for a reasonably cheap nVidia video card (ca. 100 euro) that I can set pass-thru to a VM (so I can use its OpenCL capabilities for rendering). The ESXi compatibility list is, as usual, totally useless.

This doesn't really answer your question, but yes. You are right, there is no HCL for VMDirectPath I/O devices and I believe has never been. The best you can get is server compatibility check against VMDirectPath I/O feature. It's under Systems / Server section in the Features list.

NVidia forces users to stick with pro-series GPUs (afaik NVidia did some tweaks in drivers so that consumer-GPUs do not work for pass-through). There are some Quaddro-cards close to 100€ (i.e. K420), but do not expect too much performance (~300/12gflops single/double)...
