Change root password on ESXi 5 host in vSphere Cluster

I would like to change the root password on my ESXi 5 hosts that are in a vSphere cluster. Can I just go into the console & change the password? Any gotchas?

I found the article below that says the host "may" need to be reconnected. Not sure what would cause the "may" to come into play.

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=100465...

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Basically the root password is only required for the inital connection, after this vCenter Server uses the vpxuser account to communicate with the host. However, according to e.g. ESXi root password change and vCenter connectivity there might be reasons to "update" the password (i.e. reconnect the host). Not sure whether this is by design or a bug!? Maybe that's what the note in the KB article you mentioned refers to.

Would you recommend just changing the ESXi hosts' password & leaving it at that knowing that if something "strange" happens in the future it just needs to be reconnected or change the password & do a reconnect?

Thanks,

Patrick

I'm not sure about the root cause of the issue mentioned in the other discussion I mentioned, so I would most likely just change the root password, keep the old password in mind and see what happens.

That's how I will proceed then. Thank you for your help.
