Cannot give 2 vCPUs to VM due to Licensing restriction

Hello,

I am running Esxi 6.7 Hypervisor the free version.

After I installed a second VM with one vCPU I wanted to add another vCPU, then I get the error that I do not have enough Licenses for this operation. My first VM runs with two vCPUs. Does this mean I can only have 3 vCPUs running???

Is this a limitation of the free version or have I missed something???

I thought there is only a limitation on physical CPU???

Ahhh....... for adding vCPU when a VM is running you need

- vSphere Edition which enable CPU HotAdd

- a GuestOS Edition which supports CPU HotAdd

- You need to enable this feature on the VM before you turn the VM on (it disables automaticly vNUMA so please take care)

So... your problem is solved Smiley Happy

No this isnt a licensing restriction. The one and only limit is the max. 8 vCPU per VM. You can run unlimited VMs also with the free ESXi Hypervior and there is no physical limit! This was true for 6.5.

How may logical CPUs does the ESXi detects? What was the original error message?

Hello Joerg,

thank You for Your answer :smileylaugh:

I found a workaround. I can add up to 8 vCPUs when the VM is down. But as far as I know it should work while VM is running....

ESXi detects 8 logical Processor.
