Cannot create a quiesced snapshot

Dear Experts,

I get the following error message when I want to create a quiesced snapshot in vCenter 5.

The guest OS has reported an error during quiescing. The error code was: 5 The error message was: 'VssSyncStart' operation failed: Unspecified error (0x80004005)

The snaphot will be created event there is an error message but the are no snapshots in the snapshot manager. I can consolidate the snapshots.

I did the following test to narrow down the error:

- There are no VSS errors in the eventlog

- Windows Backup works

- Reinstalled vmware Tools doesn't help

- Reregister vmware VSS provider doesn't help

- All the VSS writers are in a 'Stable' state with no errors.

- It makes no difference creating the snapshot in vCenter or on the ESX server

Has anybody an idea?

What app is running in the VM? Also check out http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1018194 to see if that helps.

Hello

Most of the VM's with this problem are running Lotus Domino Server but not all.

I/O seems not to be a problem because it doesn't work either when nobody is using the system (during the night).

Not sure of the Domino version, but IBM doesn't support VSS with Domino, so try the snapshots with the quiesce disabled. You may also want to modify the VMware Tools install to remove the VSS driver completely.
