I'am trying to connect my D-Link DWM-157 USB 3g internet stick (plugged into the ESXi host) to a VMWare machine, but the device is not listed when I try to add it to the vm. (The VM has an USB controller) But when I connect the usb stick to my computer I'am able to connect the device using the vSphere Client. But this way I always have to run a vSphere client to use the device. Why doesn't this work directly on the host?
Here are the details about my system:
- ESXi 6.0.0 version 3029758
- Host: Dell PowerEdge 2950
- Output of lsusb:
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 2001:a407 D-Link Corp.

I found some errors in /var/usb.log that are described in this thread: Error Usb arbitrator
I've changed the usbarb.rules file as described in the thread, but after a reboot the file is empty again. I've also tried to restart all services after changing the file, but the usb device still does not appear when adding hardware to a vm. How can I solve this problem?
Is the modem compatible with ESXi?!
I didn't found a list of compatible devices. The modem has two modes. In the first mode a CD ROM is emulated to install the software and the second mode is the modem mode. (Which should be a simple serial port) And it works when I connect the device using the vSphere client, so why shouldn't it work directly on the ESX host?
