Cannot Copy Files Between Datastore Folders

Jump to solution

Dear all, good afternoon.

Sometimes I need to create a new folder in my datastore and copy files (usually .vmdk and .vmx) from am existing folder to this new folder. I was using ESXi 6.0 and this copy operation never worked using ESXi web interface. To be able to do that, I needed to use vSphere Client for Windows.

I recently upgraded to ESXi 6.5, and the issue is still the same. What worries me is VMware is not going to release new versions for vSphere Client anymore, which probably indicates I'll not be able to use the Windows client to do that.

Does anyone knows any way to copy a file between folders in datastore that doesn't need the Windows client?

The files you're trying to copy are attached to a powered on virtual machine? Anyway, did you tried using the SSH or WinSCP?

The following VMware KB article shows all steps that you need to copy or move virtual machines files in a VMware environment: Moving or copying a virtual machine within a VMware environment (1000936) | VMware KB

Hello Richardson, good afternoon,

No, the files that I'm trying to copy are not attached to any powered on virtual machine. I didn't try SSH or WinSCP, my fault. Thanks for the tip and the article link.
