Cannot Change vSwitch0 MTU to 1522 in ESXi 5.5

Hello VMWare Community

Since 2 days ago, when I tried to change the MTU of vSwitch0 to MTU 1522 (I have it with a 801.1q trunk to the C2960 Access Switch), I receive the following error:

Fault Details:
Status:An error occurred during host configuration.

Error Stack:
Operation failed, diagnostics report: Unable to set MTU to 1522 the following uplinks refused the MTU setting: vmnic1

Additional Fault Details:
VC Build: 1312298
Error Type: PlatformConfigFault
Entity: HostNetworkSystem
Method: UpdateVirtualSwitch

At first sight , I suspect of a esix driver issue of the vmnic (Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5722 Gigabit Ethernet), so I search in the compatibility guide for the correct driver (ESXi 5.5 tg3 version 3.131d.v60.4-2vmw N/A VMware Inbox), and I found that the current driver is :

~ # ethtool -i vmnic0

driver: tg3

version: 3.123c.v55.5

firmware-version: 5722-v3.11, ASFIPMI v6.03

bus-info: 0000:01:00.0

However, as the compatibility guide only says that is VMware Inbox, I cannot download it for my ESXi version (VMware ESXi 5.5.0 build-2068190). I really appreciate any help or advice regarding this issue.

Regards.

Hi there,

Could well be a driver issue, this NIC wasn't always able to support increased MTU sizes so hopefully the driver update will sort it for you.

You can get the latest driver for your ESXi version through myvmware.com, once logged in go to View & Download Products, click the All Products tab and choose View Download Components for  VMware vSphere.  Change the version in the drop down at the top to 5.5 then click the Drivers & Tools tab, and expand Driver CDs - the latest driver can be downloaded from here...

Hope this helps

Hello, I just updated de driver and reboot the esxi host, but the issue persists:

Before reboot:

/vmfs/volumes/5653739a-afcd2c61-63ad-842b2b1afce9 # localcli software vib update -d tg3-3.137l.v55.1-offline_bundle-3441687

.zip

Installation Result:

Message: The update completed successfully, but the system needs to be rebooted for the changes to be effective.

   Reboot Required: true

   VIBs Installed: Broadcom_bootbank_net-tg3_3.137l.v55.1-1OEM.550.0.0.1331820

   VIBs Removed: VMware_bootbank_net-tg3_3.123c.v55.5-1vmw.550.2.33.2068190

   VIBs Skipped:

After reboot:

~ # esxcli software vib list | grep Broad

net-tg3                        3.137l.v55.1-1OEM.550.0.0.1331820     Broadcom  VMwareCertified   2016-05-28

And give the same error:

Call "HostNetworkSystem.UpdateVirtualSwitch" for object "networkSystem-625" on vCenter Server "VCSA01-LAB-TEST" failed.

Operation failed, diagnostics report: Unable to set MTU to 1522 the following uplinks refused the MTU setting: vmnic0

Check if there is a firmware upgrade available for your NIC card?

from the below KB some of the firmware versions in Broadcom Nics had issues.

VMware KB: vMotion fails and unable to set MTU of 9000 on ESX/ESXi with some versions of nx_nic, unm...
