Can't revert to snapshots with virtual memory saved after bios update of the esxi host

Hi All,

We have an esxi v4.1.

The BIOS version of the host machine was updated by our System team and after that we can't revert to any snapshot that was saved before the update if the guest is powered on.

We can only revert to snapshots that are saved while powered off.

I've search the web for this but i couldn't find anything.

Anyone encountered such case??

Thanks!

bellow is the error i get:

The features supported by the processors in this machine are different from the features supported by the processors in the machine on which the checkpoint was saved. Try to resume the snapshot on a machine where the processors have the same features.

BIOS upgrade may have change some setting in CPU features.

But I suggest to remove all the snapshots at all.

On ESX/ESXi snaps must not be used as a backup or versioning system. Use backup instead.

PS: thread has been moved to a propoper forum area.

First thank you for the quick response and for moving to the correct post...(I don't post questions too much)

I'm not sure what you mean by using backup so i will look into it but for now what we do is we save snapshots during the work.

We also stopped saving the virtual memory for the VM's for saving space.

About the issue in hand, Is there a way to recover from this? maybe trying to recover the BIOS settings before the upgrade?

Thanks!

About backup solutions see:

http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-10780

About recover the snapshot, you can remove the memory dump form the snapshot.

But you have to manually edit some files and something can go wrong if you make a mistake:
