Can't p2v, any reason?

Hi all,

I am trying to convert an XP box using the converter, but it is refusing to give a runnable result, it's an OEM install of XP pro, could that be a reason and if so why?

I really can't re-install as we don't have the disks for some of the apps any more.

Any other options open?

Thanks

Dave

What is the result error code? Blue screen after completion, or failure during the process? This post recommends using Converter 3.0.3 for XP conversions.

No error code it just says I need to register to login but it wont let me register, I even tried the registration wizard on the phone but it failed and said it might be a fake copy of xp, I know it's not as it's been running for years and has passed microsofts security checks before.

I tried a repair install and it was the same.

If its asking for license activation its because of OEM licesne as the licesne it is bound to a prticluar hardware. You should have a volume license media of the OS and a product key and try doing a repair.

If it is hanging at activation, please have a look at this thread for more information: http://communities.vmware.com/thread/317551

If you're still using an OEM license, I don't believe that is permitted via licensing. I believe you can swap to a volume licensing key to continue, but I would confirm with a Microsoft representative.

The other posts are correct, you cannot legally use an OEM serial key for a VM.

OEM keys are tied to the hardware purchased.

You will need a "regular" XP CD key to be legit.

Thanks, I did try a regular xp key BT it would not take it, I also tried the repair using the regular disk but no change.

If this is the case then what chance do I have of backing up and restoring my software into a new machine if the software is permanently tied to a certain box?? Makes a mockery out of backing up surely??

You may be able to talk to Microsoft support and get around this in the event of a failure. You could also call them for this issue and see if they'll allow it. It might be worth a shot as a last resort. The number should be listed in the activation by phone process inside XP.

Ok I'll bear that in mind as a last resort.

What do yo think re the backup point, seems pointless backing up if you cant install on a new box??
