Can't open VM consoles

Hi,

My PC threw a bit of a wobbler last week, and since then I can't open any VM consoles. I get the error:

Unable to connect to the MKS: Login (username/password) incorrect.

At the same time I get 2 failure audits in my security event viewer:

Logon attempt by: MICROSOFT_AUTHENTICATION_PACKAGE_V1_0
Logon account:  52b311e4-55e4-63b5-4ded-9ce6da01d328
Source Workstation: SMCA-1008
Error Code: 0xC0000064

and

Logon Failure:
Reason:        Unknown user name or bad password
     User Name:    52b311e4-55e4-63b5-4ded-9ce6da01d328
     Domain:
     Logon Type:    2
     Logon Process:    Advapi
     Authentication Package:    MICROSOFT_AUTHENTICATION_PACKAGE_V1_0
     Workstation Name:    SMCA-1008

I've tried different logins to both my vCenter server and ESX hosts, as well as rebooting my vCenter server and removing/reinstalling vSphere Client (4.0). It works fine from other machines, so it must be local to my PC... Any ideas???

Cheers,

Iain

Hi there,

I haved a similar issue in the past and it was down to name resolution (DNS)

Check you can ping your Virtual Centre by name.

Hi,

Yep, can ping it by name, fqdn, and IP. Same goes for my ESX hosts...

Ok, I get connected to an authentication daemon on 3 of my hosts (full-fat ESX4.0), but not the ESX4i host...

Hi,

Check for another host registering it's host name and IP in DNS as a duplicate IP or there simply be duplicate IP.

If you have DHCP active on that seg check it for a DHCP request related to that ESXi host.

Mike

Hi

It was fine from other PCs. There were a couple of other pecularities with my PC though, so I used the opportunity to stick Win7 on it.

So...the problem is solved, but not understood!.

Cheers,

Iain

Hi there,

I also have the exact same problem... I have VMWare server 2.0.2 installed, running on Win XP 32bit. I can login to the server fine and create a virtual machine.

But when the machine is started and I try to open a console, I get the following error:

Unable to connect to the MKS: Login (username/password) incorrect.

When going to WinXP's event viewer, Security tab, I get the following:

Logon attempt by: MICROSOFT_AUTHENTICATION_PACKAGE_V1_0
Logon account:  52850032-ac5c-8f23-568e-39a0ab72de59
Source Workstation: SC077993
Error Code: 0xC0000064

as well as

Logon Failure:
Reason:        Unknown user name or bad password
     User Name:    52850032-ac5c-8f23-568e-39a0ab72de59
     Domain:
     Logon Type:    2
     Logon Process:    Advapi
     Authentication Package:    MICROSOFT_AUTHENTICATION_PACKAGE_V1_0
     Workstation Name:    SC077993

Error code 0xC0000064 means user not found, which makes sense since the account is a string of hex numbers...

Any idea would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Patrick
