Can't initialize RAID disks for ESXi 5.5 U2

Hi.

I would like to ask for help in my problem. I have a motherboard called Asus Z10PA-U8 (it is a one socket server motherboard) I have 256GB installed DDR4 RAM on it. So the problem is, that no matter what type of RAID controller I am using, is it from Intel the RST, or the LSI MegaRAID, and I create a RAID 0 or RAID1 or RAID 5 disk array, when I try to install the system(ESXi Hypervisor) on it, he will find drivers that are separated. For example I have created RAID 0 with 2 Samsung SSD 250GB, and at the initial step of the ESXi installation it shows me 2 separated disks with capacity of 250GB.

As I have found out I think that the chip which is used for the raid is Intel C610.

You don't have a real hardware RAID controller, but a software RAID aka fake-RAID. This is the kind of cheap onboard controller you find in many desktop motherboards, these are not real hardware RAID controllers.

ESXi does not and has never supported these fake-RAID controllers. They rely on specific drivers and the OS to do the actual work in software and don't present an abstracted a logical volume to the OS as a real RAID controller would do. This is why you still see 2 individual disks even though you created a RAID array.

There's no way to "fix" this except getting a real hardware RAID controller. Make sure it's on the HCL:

Otherwise this controller will only really work more or less reliably in a non-RAID/JBOD mode.

OK, I get it.

And if I create a LUN on another PC and try to map it, will it be fast enough for maybe just some backup driver usage of some VMs?

My plan is that to use a physical machine, install Win Server 2008 R2 at least, and put there these 3 WD 2TB RED disks, create a LUN and then use them fort the vmware esxi?

OK, I have found an older PCI SATA Raid controller called SATA NVRAID/Silicon Image SIL3114CTU. It is not really listed in the document, what you have written above, but I simple SATA NVRAID/Silicon Image SIL3114 without letters is there. What do you think, will it work?

So you'll have to setup an iSCSI server on the Windows box. Will it be fast? No, but mainly due to using slow consumer grade disks. Will it be fast enough for your needs? That I can't answer.

Your best bet is to just try it out. While it may be officially unsupported hardware, it does not necessarily mean it won't work.

I think SIL3114CTU will not work, and even if it did, you would be dissapointed with its terrible performance. ESXi does not support disk caching, so you need real, "mature" raid controller, with on-board cache (the bigger/faster the better), and power-backup (battery or capacitor) if you like your data.


I recommend to pick something from HCL (if you are low on budget, try eBay etc). Not only you need controller to be supported, but you also must be able to monitor its health from within ESXi. So you need driver and smis-provider (and some management-tools). I doubt you could find these for some SiL-based controller of unknown origin.

to see the compatibility check the Vmware HCL under and choose  I/o devices and check if the hardware supports it ,

if esxi is unable to detect the Raid disk  , rare case it might be issue with some missing VIB's or the drivers from the image .

confirm if you have the intended VIB certified by VMWare on the iso image
