Can't delete a file - invalid argument

hello, I am needing help with a problem on a VM.  the vmx file got locked up some how and there is a .lck file in the directory.  I can't delete it nor can I delete a whole slew of other vm files in that directory.  Even with rm -rf it still errors out with invalid argument.  This is very frustrating because all the information found online is either wrong or severely outdated.

I have rebooted the esxi host.  I am logged in as root.  I have chmod'd the file to 777 and made sure root is owner.  Still says invalid argument.  Can't delete from ssh or from datastore browser.  Can't restart the vm, can't consolidate disks, can't edit the vmx file.  The datastore is hosted on a single NVMe drive.  There is no NFS involved, just VMFS6 on the drive.  I don't know why these files are not working.  There is plenty of drive space, almost a Terabyte.  ESxi version is 8.0b.  This is the second time a VM puked.  Why is this happening?
