I am using a logical RAID5 volume in my esxi 6.0.0 Update 3 (Build 5224934).
I added an additional hard disk to the RAID5 volume and extended the storage to a max of 7.28TB.
In the esx web gui the logical device shows the additional storage space but I am unable to extend the vmfs disk from 5.45TB to 7.28TB.
After deleting the small partition at start and keep only the big partition I was able to finaly extend the partition.
Rescan all disks and vmfs volumes and try expanding datastore.
if it doesnt work, try connecting to an ESXi host directly and expand the datastore.
Rescaned the disk and volumes around 30 times
Also rebooted the ESXi server several time.
The ESXi Server is not connected to a vCenter Server.
Used partedUtil fix and fixGpt to fix the partition table of the device.
But still no luck with extending the partiton size.
Tried to extend the size with vmkfstools -G but then I receive:
Underlying device has no free space
What's the output of partedUtil getptbl "/vmfs/devices/disks/<volume-in-question>"?
Btw. unless I'm mistaken, only a single VMFS datastore per LUN is recommended/supported?
André
PS: In addition to the output of the above mentioned command, provide the output of partedUtil getUsableSectors "/vmfs/devices/disks/<volume-in-question>"
[root@ESX:~] partedUtil getptbl /vmfs/devices/disks/naa.RANDOMNUMBER
