Can VMware 3.5 VM's upgrade to 4.1?

If I have a server running 3.5 update 5 and I want to migrate the VM's to 4.1, does ESX support upgrading these vm's?

Hi Frank,

Yes, you can move any VM's either from vMotion or cold migration to ESX 4.1 as far as it meets the vMotion or cold migration requirements.

Reason. ESX 3.5.x has VM hardware ver 4 and ESX 4.0 onward VM hardware version is 7.

Every ESX version is backward compatible to run the VM's from previous Version of ESX.

Kindly consider allotting points if this information help you.

If yes then you can migrate the vm and upgrade the hardware version and vmware tools on vm but once you upgrade it you cannot migrate the vm back to ESX 3.5

you can still run on an outdated hardware version and vmware tools of 3.5 on 4.1. It will just work fine, atleast if things does not work well it can be easy fallback.
