yes, you will be able to vmotion back and forth between 3.5 and 4.0

just leave your guest tools "out of date" until all ESX versions are on their final build, then upgrade the guest tools and the virtual hardware

Absolutely.

It the way to do a infrastructure upgrade (from 3.5 to 4) without downtime.

I'm curious about this, it might save me some headaches. What is the workflow?

1. Detach host from VI3.5 cluster

2. Attach host to VI4.0 cluster

3. VMotion guest VMs on VI3.5 host on to VI4.0 hosts

4. Upgrade VI3.5 hosts

Is that all there is to it?

Hi chriswaltham,

If you are planning to upgrade vCenter Server(VC) to vSphere 4.0, 1st and 2nd steps are not required.

After VC upgrade, hosts(VI3.5 hosts) will get auto reconnect to vCenter Server 4.0 in cluster.

Please go through following links for detail procedure on upgrade scenarios, which will also help you to choose best possible way to upgrade your environment to vSphere 4.0
