Can ESXi 5.1 VM runs on ESXi 5 Hosts ?

Hi,

We have updated one of the ESXi Hosts to Release 5.1.  VMs running on that Host are updated with the latest VMWare Tools as well.

However, we have to migrate one VM to a cluster of ESXi 5 Host.  We just wonder whether there will be any compatibility problem for runninng a VM with latest VMWare Tools (i.e. the one from ESXi 5.1) with ESXi 5 Hosts ?

Thanks

From what it looks like, as long as you didn't upgrade your hardware to version 9, you should be okay.
And this looks pretty convincing:

The version of VMware Tools included in vSphere 5.0 is supported on vSphere 4.x and 5.0 virtual machines. That is, you can also use this new version of VMware Tools in virtual machines on ESX/ESXi 4.x hosts.

So I don't think it would be any different for 5.1

Unless you havent upgrade the VM Virtual Hardware version to 9 you should be good to run the VM's on ESXi 5 hosts.

You should be good as long as the vm compatibility level is not at vSphere 5.1 level ie. Hardware 9

Your default compatibility of a Cluster should be at vSphere 5 or lower to join that Cluster.
