Hi,
I've read through some of the docs for vmotion CPU compatibility and just having some difficulty understanding all the differences. We currently have HP 4 * x7350 CPU server and 2 HP 4 * x7460 CPU.
We will be running ESX4 Ent and need to vmotion VM's between these hosts - I've done some research and found these docs. requires SS4.1 mask
http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1991
but it seems this mask is only experimentatlly supported from;
http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1993
can anyone please advise?
Many thanks..........
Cheers
Enable EVC on cluster level and all masking will be done automatically.

yesCPU masking is experimental support for your 73XX host you can do vmotion with 72XX,51/53/33/73XX
Thanks to both of you for your assistance.
Based on the information I've gathered so far having the 2 X7460 and 1 X7350 server I will need to enable EVC or CPU masking to make sure vMotion works. But for HA there will be no issues since the VMs are restarted.
But what is the difference between CPU Masking SS4.1 mask and EVC?
Many thanks
EVC change CPUID masks automatically, you don't have to change masks for all VMs by hand, that's all.

Hi,
While configuring HA or Vmotion we can enable the Enhanced VMotion Compatibility (EVC) option(Check box) and its to eliminate the many VMotion CPU compatibility problems.However EVC does not allow for migration with VMotion between Intel and AMD processors.
