CIFS/NFS Fileserver: Pure virtual (w/o DirectPath) vs native

Hey folks.

Due to some late hardware-issues with my native Fileserver (the system partition went bad and it took me quite some hours to regain access to the software raid) i'm currently evaluating the pros and cons of virtualizing the entire box including the storage under a hardware RAID6 within my existing ESXi5 which is already running a couple of VMs.

My main concerns are about the drive-performance and off course, reliability as i would have to stripe multiple 2TB VMDKs within the guest OS to re sample my current setup.

What if a HDD (with the size of a VMDK) fails, i would just replace it as i normally do?!

What if a VMDK fails, this would pretty much nuke my RAID0?!

Is it generally recommendable to virtualize a pure Fileserver or should i better migrate to a hardware RAID and keep it native?

Thanks in advanced for any thoughts and advices.
