Boot ESXi 4 from USB

I put ESXi 4 on a USB flash key, plugged it in Machine1 , booted it up, configured it with IP 10.10.10.110/24. Then I used a crossover cable to connect Machine1 to Machine2 that has IP 10.10.10.120/24 but I cannot ping Machine1 from Machine2. On Machine1, I used "unsupported" account to go to command-line. From there, I can ping itself 10.10.10.110 but cannot ping Machine2 either. Any suggestion? Thanks.

How many NICs do you have on these servers?

There is only one NIC on them. After shut down ESXi 4 machine, unplug the USB key and reboot it to Winodows, the 2 machines can ping each other.

I don't think that ESXi has a lot of network self discovery. Try using dhcp. The ESXi machines will end up with a 169 address. See if they can see each other with that.
