Best Practive for 5.5 vCenter Database?

We are using SQL Express but have run into some issues as the cluster has grown, mostly due to the number of VMs. For 5.5 what is the best database software to use? We want to stick with SQL and use standard. Do we run SQL 2008 or 2012? Do we run Win 2008 R2 or 2012?

Thanks.

I first tried using a 2012 server for vCenter, poitning to a SQL 2012 server, nothing but grief. I ended up using 2008 server for vCenter and stuck using the SQL 2012 server and it worked just fine.

Thank you, Express

I have had no issues running Windows Server 2012 Standard with SQL Server 2012 Standard.  This configuration has worked great for me in both the lab and production environments on vSphere 5.5.

My advice, make sure you read all of the installation / upgrade documentation before changing anything in your environment.
