  • 1.  Basic Question on ESXi

    Hello VMware,

I have some basic query on ESXi, please help to resolve them.

    1. What is difference between “Remove from Inventory” and “Delete From Disk” ?

Correct me if I am wrong -- > Delete disk will remove it from disk and inventory, while inventory will keep image on disk.

    2. How to check ARP table on ESXi for vlans ?

    3. How to do packet capture on ESXi ?

    4. Can I assign IP to VM NIC? Or I have to assign IP always on Guest OS?

I think VM has MAC configured on both VM interface and guest interface. But IP is only on Guest. Verify.

    Yes, you're correct.

    2. How to check ARP table on ESXi for vlans ?

    3. How to do packet capture on ESXi ?

See: VMware KB: Capturing a network trace in ESXi using Tech Support Mode or ESXi Shell

On the ESXi side, you will assign IP address to VMkernel interfaces and not to vmnic (physical interface). At VM side, the IP address is assign to network interface inside the Guest OS and the MAC address should be the same inside the Guest OS and on virtual network interface, unless you're using some software that create additional MAC address inside the Guest OS, like some network load balancing softwares.
