Backup Multiple Vmware MAchines on the same USB HD

Dears,

I'm new user of Vmware VSphere, I have one HP server DLG380 with one VSphere esxi 5.5 which contains three windows server 2012. I have also one USB HDD with 2TB and I want to make a backup of all my three servers on the same USB device.

The issue that when I add this USB device on one VM, I cannot add it at the same time to the others VMs in order to schedule a windows server backup.

I tried to look for a solution on the Internet but without success.

Please could you advise me how can I backup the three servers on the same USB HD.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Best regards.

Hi,

you need to do your backups one at a time, because you can't connect the USB device to more than one VM.

Even if you could, the filesystem on the disk couldn't handle it and would corrupt files or the whole filesystem.

As a workaround, you could mount the USB HDD to one server and share this Partition over the network with the other VMs, so they can write on this windows share.

Hi Tim,

Thank you for your quick reply.

Since it's not possible, I think the best way to do it is like your proposed.

I will try it and close the case.

Thanks again.
