Backup Exec and Snapshots / Add Disk Space

I am using Backup Exec to do full VM backups

After the backup, I can see a snapshot for the VM in the Snapshot Manager

I have deleted all the snapshots from the VM and shut down the VM.

At this stage the Disk Provisioning area is greyed out and IO cannot add disk space to the existing disk

I do see that there is a -000001 and 000002 vmdk still kicking around in the VM folder

a) Is it safe to delete the 00001 and 0002 files ?

b) Any idea how to stop Backup Exec from creating the snapshot files

Thanks,

Steve

This is a Domain controller VM

As it turns out Backup Exec was hung up on the VM backup

Once I cancelled the backup, I was able to consolidate

Thanks for you help

a) Is it safe to delete the 00001 and 0002 files ?

Check if VM is reporting any alarm. Your VM icon in the inventory might be with yellow triangle on it and when you read alarm description, it might be 'Snapshot consolidation needed..'.

in that case just simply right click on VM, go to snapshots in pop-up menu and click on 'Consolidate' this will then make sure that those delta.vmdk files are removed with proper consolidation with base disk.

b) Any idea how to stop Backup Exec from creating the snapshot files

I guess, backup exec is using VADP (vSphere APIs for Data Protection), so at the time of running backup job, it's going to take vm snapshots. only if you do guest OS level backup agent to do backup which will not trigger snapshot creation.

Yes, there is a triangle ...

I then went and did a consolidate but it came up with a vmdk lock error

I presume I need to power down the VM down before Consolidating ?

I was able to clear up that one VM ....

BUT, I have a second VM where I get this message while trying to consolidate :

An error occurred while consolidating disks: msg.snapshot.error-DUPLICATEDISK.
