Backing up ESX4 with Netbackup.

We have 4 ESX 3.x servers which we currently use vmbk.pl to backup. We just purchased out 5th server and have discovered that VmPerl is no longer developed for ESX.

How can I back up my server and guests now? We purchased Enterprise licenses for all of our servers but consolidated backup requires shared storage. For some reason Netbackup is skipping /dev and /vmbk as well.

We do NOT have the space to copy the snapshots off to a seperate server, besides I would like to be able to restore directly to ESX server.

We do NOT have shared storage nor is it available at this time.

So are we stuck with ESX 3.5 or is there a way to continue using new versions of ESX in the future? Does anybody know how long VMware will support version 3.x?

consolidated backup requires shared storage.

Not true. Only for SAN mode it is required.

IT require a local storage for stage the VM images (if you use image level backup).

PS: note that NetBackup (from 6.5) has an option to backup VMs in a VMware environment

Yes, I'm looking at the Netbackup option. Our current master does not have a VM option so I'm sure it's an add on.

I will look at the consolidated backup again but I think it still will require a seperate storage area.

Thanks for the reply!

NOBODY is able to backup ESX 4.0? Not a very good enterprise server then.

So my options are to invest in a SAN/NAS/server with LOTS of storage and purchase Consolidated backup or not backup the servers at all?

I like ESX, thay have been very reliable servers for the past few years. I will need to look at other solutions if this is going to make the cost skyrocket.

Are you looking for free backup solutions for vSphere ( ESX 4 ), some of those were posted. If you are looking for paid options there are many available.
