Automated ESXi config backups

Hi,

I want to do automated backups of my ESXi config to an offsite location for DR purposes.

I found the  "vim-cmd hostsvc/firmware/backup_config" command which seems to do what I want, but I have a question:

(Ref: https://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=20421...)

I am managing my ESXi Server from a vSphere Web Client running on a vCenter Server Appliance.  I wondered is it safe to use the following command (as suggested by that KB article) if my ESXi Server is managed by VCS?

vim-cmd hostsvc/firmware/sync_config

The reason I asked is that I have already encountered problems when I have made changes through the vSphere Client (Windows s/w) or directly on the ESXi UI and those have not been reflected in the VCS environment.  I have also seen the following message on the ESXi UI: "This host is being managed by vCenter Server. No action should be taken, but be aware that actions may be performed automatically by vCenter Server without your knowledge."

So the question is simple.  In my backup scripts which I am creating on a remote Linux box is it safe to include the sync_config command or will that upset the balance of power with vCenter Server?

I'm running ESXi 6.0.0 Update 2 version 600.9.5.0.48

Many Thanks

I can't really answer your question but I backup the configs of my hosts every month using PowerCLI and I keep the last 2 backups onsite and offsite.
