Auto Deploy without Host Profiles

I'm preparing for a large amount of ESXi 5.1 deployments and considering options with a scripted deployment type vs state full auto deploy. With the auto deploy option, the ESXi servers will be licensed for standard edition and there isn’t much in terms of configuration I need to do to the ESXi server itself.

Can anyone advise if I can still auto deploy with only standard edition and no host profiles?
